DIY Banana Leaf Backdrop for Photos

Oct 27, 2025Megha Bordia

Hey everyone! Diwali is just around the corner, and this year, let’s make our decorations extra special and help our planet! Instead of using things that can hurt the Earth, we can use banana leaves to make a beautiful backdrop for all your Diwali photos!

Why Banana Leaves are Awesome

  • Good for the Earth (Eco-Friendly): Banana leaves are like nature's own decorations! When you’re done using them, they break down on their own, just like leaves in the autumn. So, we don’t have to worry about throwing away plastic that sticks around forever. It's like magic! Using eco-friendly decorations helps the environment.
  • Unique Diwali Style: Instead of the usual decorations, imagine bright green banana leaves behind your photos! They're super different and will make your Diwali pictures look amazing and fresh! Think of the green mountains – let’s bring that lovely green into our homes.
  • Perfect for Renters: Living in a rented house? No problem! We'll show you how to stick the leaves without hurting the walls. That way, everyone is happy!

What You Need to Make Your Banana Leaf Backdrop (DIY Supplies)

Think of it like a fun art project! Here's what you'll need for this DIY project:

  • Lots of Banana Leaves: You'll need enough to cover the space behind you for photos. Ask your parents to help find them.
  • Scissors: Be careful! Ask an adult to help you cut the leaves.
  • Removable Tape or Hooks: This is tape or hooks that won't peel the paint off the wall. You can find it at most stores.
  • Something to Hold it Up: Like a wall, a frame, or even a big piece of wood.
  • Optional Fun Stuff: Twinkling fairy lights, bright orange marigold flowers (like we see in the market!), or anything else that makes you happy!

Let's Build Your Banana Leaf Backdrop!

Okay, here’s how we do it:

  1. Get the Leaves Ready:
    • Clean Them: Wipe each leaf with a wet cloth to get any dirt off.
    • Trim Them: Ask a grown-up to help you cut the edges of the leaves to make them look neat. You can make different shapes!
    • Plan It Out: Lay the leaves on the floor to see how you want them to look when they're on the wall.
  2. Stick the Leaves Without Hurting the Wall! (Super Important!)
    • Removable Tape: Use little pieces of the special tape to stick the leaves to the wall. Make sure the tape is hidden under the leaves.
    • Removable Hooks: Put the hooks on the wall (follow the instructions on the package). Then, hang the leaves from the hooks using clips or string.
    • Using a Frame or Wood: If you have a frame or a piece of wood, you can stick the leaves to that instead of the wall. You can use stronger tape if you do this.
  3. Build Your Backdrop:
    • Start at the bottom and work your way up.
    • Overlap the leaves a little bit so you can't see the wall behind them.
    • Make sure they are stuck on well!

Time to Decorate!

Now for the fun part!

  • Twinkle Lights: Wrap fairy lights around the leaves to make them glow!
  • Diwali Decorations: Add marigolds, little clay lamps (diyas), or anything else that says "Diwali!"
  • Photo Corner: Put some cushions on the floor so people can sit comfortably. Add props like colorful umbrellas, lanterns, or even Diwali clothes so everyone can have fun taking pictures!

Strike a Pose!

  • Family Time: Call your family and take lots of pictures!
  • Get Creative: Try different poses, use different lights, and don't forget to smile! Think about holding diyas or showing off some yummy Diwali sweets.

Banana Plant Superpowers!

Did you know that people use banana leaves to wrap food while cooking? This makes the food taste even better! And of course, we all love to eat bananas!
