Plants in Durga Puja: A Special Story
For a long time, people who believe in the Hindu religion have used plants in their special ceremonies. Plants aren’t just pretty; they also symbolize good things, like prosperity and purity. Durga Puja, our favorite festival, uses plants in a beautiful and meaningful way! The kinds of plants we choose and how we use them are important and tell a special story.
Plants Help Us Connect with Goddess Durga

Instead of just using them for decoration, some plants have to be included in the Durga Puja! We offer Goddess Durga special leaves, flowers, and fruits. Each one is picked carefully because it has its own special meaning and a connection to the Goddess. If we understand what these plants mean, decorating the pandal becomes more than just making it look pretty – it’s like sending a special message of love and respect to the Goddess!
Green is Good: Eco-Friendly Durga Puja
These days, we all know it's important to take care of our Earth. Instead of using plastic that hurts the environment, we can use plants for our Durga Puja decorations. This way, we say thank you to the Earth and show our love for Goddess Durga. Plus, many people prefer eco-friendly options, so using plants is a great idea!
Special Plants We Use in Durga Puja

There are some plants that are extra special for Durga Puja. You'll see them a lot in the decorations. Let's learn about them:
a. Bel Patra: A Leaf for Shiva and Durga
The Bel patra plant has leaves that come in sets of three. It's very important to Lord Shiva, and because of that, it’s special to Durga too! The three leaves represent the three main gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) all in one! We offer it to the Goddess to ask her to bless us. And guess what? It’s also good for you! People use it in the traditional medicine called Ayurveda.
b. Banana Plant: A Happy Beginning!
The banana plant, or Kadali, symbolizes abundance and fertility! We place it at the front of the pandal to signify a happy start and to welcome everyone. The whole plant – the trunk, the leaves, the fruit – is special. We even give it a ceremonial bath in a ritual called kalabou! It’s believed that the banana plant represents Goddess Durga herself!
c. Saptaparni: Seven Mothers Watching Over Us
The Saptaparni plant has leaves that grow in clusters of seven. These seven leaves represent the seven divine mothers, called Sapta Matrika. You'll often see it behind the Durga statue. It's like those seven mothers are there, giving us their blessings.
d. Ashok Tree: No More Sadness!
The Ashok tree symbolizes the removal of sorrow and the arrival of happiness! Even if you don't have a big garden, you can still have a small Ashok plant in a pot. That way, you can bring some of that special feeling into your home during Durga Puja.
e. Durva Grass: Tiny but Mighty!
Even though Durva grass looks small, it's very important. It represents longevity and good luck. We offer it to the Goddess to ask her to keep us healthy and happy.
Make Your Own Decorations!
Let’s use our imaginations and make some cool decorations using things we can find easily!

a. Mango Leaf Garland: A Welcoming Sign
A Toran is a special decoration that hangs over a door. It’s like saying "Welcome!" You can tie fresh mango leaves together with a string to make a beautiful Toran. It smells good and makes your house or the pandal look really special.
b. Pretty Plates: Puja Thali Made with Leaves
Instead of using plates made of plastic or metal, let’s use a clay or bamboo plate and decorate it with fresh leaves, flowers, and fruits. This makes the Puja Thali look even prettier, and it's good for the Earth too!
c. Colorful Flowers: Marigold Garlands
You can find fresh leaves nearby, but you can also buy colorful marigold flower garlands. They make the decorations super bright and cheerful.
